Steffen Spielke

spielkeSteffen Spielke was born in 1959 in Altenburg. Immediately after middle school he realized his dream job was going to sea, and he began training as a sailor for commercial shipping. What followed was multiple year ship drives on several different freight ships throughout the world before he completed  a three year schooling program at a technical college to become a captain.

After a successful school program followed more ship drive times as third and second nautical officer on board of container ships of the Hapag Lloyd AG. In October 1993 he switched to the most modern and powerful polar research ship in the world: the POLARSTERN.

Since August of 1995 he has been occupied as second and first nautical officer on the POLARSTERN at almost all times, and has more than 20 expeditions to the Arctic and the Antarctic under his belt. In his free time he devotes himself to the sport of diving, travels often, and is an avid model helicopter pilot.
